A report commissioned by Amazon Prime Video and conducted by O Womaniya! found that women hold only 13% of Director/CXO positions in the top 25 Media and Entertainment (M&E) firms in India. The report also found that only 12% of Head of Department (HOD) positions in key departments such as direction, cinematography, editing, writing, and production design are held by women.
The report highlights the significant gender gap that persists in the Indian M&E industry, even though it is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the country.
There are a number of factors that contribute to this gender gap, including:
- Unconscious bias: Unconscious bias can lead to women being overlooked for promotions and leadership positions.
- Lack of role models: There is a lack of female role models in senior leadership positions in the Indian M&E industry. This can make it difficult for women to aspire to and achieve these positions themselves.
- Work-life balance challenges: The Indian M&E industry is notoriously demanding, with long hours and frequent travel. This can make it difficult for women, who often have primary caregiving responsibilities, to balance their work and personal lives.
The report also found that the growth in the number of women in leadership positions in the Indian M&E industry has been primarily driven by streaming films and series, with theatrical films remaining stagnant. This suggests that the streaming industry is more open to diversity and inclusion than the traditional film industry.
Amazon Prime Video is committed to addressing the gender gap in the Indian M&E industry. The company has launched a number of initiatives to support female talent, including:
- The Amazon Prime Video Women in Film Fellowship: This fellowship provides female filmmakers with the opportunity to work on Amazon Prime Video productions and to learn from experienced filmmakers.
- The Amazon Prime Video Women in Entertainment Leadership Program: This program is designed to develop the skills and networks of women in leadership positions in the Indian M&E industry.
Amazon Prime Video is also working to create a more inclusive workplace culture for all employees. The company has implemented a number of diversity and inclusion initiatives, such as unconscious bias training and flexible work arrangements.
By taking these steps, Amazon Prime Video is helping to lead the way in creating a more diverse and inclusive Indian M&E industry.
